Tutu's design is a celebration of simplicity and elegance. Each element of the lighting fixture is a cylindrical paper roll, slit and hung from a white aluminum fitting with a thin red string. The Japanese synthetic paper, translucent and delicate, mimics the softness of dahlia petals, while the crossed red strings add a touch of vitality. The final shape of the fixture is left to chance, resulting in a unique piece every time.
The choice of materials was a significant challenge for Takada. Striking a balance between the softness of the petals and the strength required for a lighting fixture was not easy. However, the designer's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to innovation resulted in a product that not only meets technical specifications but also transcends aesthetic expectations.
The design process for Tutu began in June 2011 in Japan and was completed in September of the same year. The product was later exhibited at the Light and Building event in April 2012. This project is a testament to Takada's dedication to creating designs that impress and inspire, and that stand the test of time.
Despite its simplicity, Tutu is a versatile piece. It comes in various sizes, including a large version measuring 700mm x 700mm x 400mm, a smaller version measuring 550mm x 550mm x 390mm, and a wall version measuring 550mm x 350mm x 450mm. Whether suspended from the ceiling or mounted on a wall, Tutu adds a touch of elegance and modernity to any space.
In recognition of its innovative design and technical excellence, Tutu was awarded Silver in the A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, further cementing Hiroki Takada's reputation as a leading figure in the world of design.
